Pamela Gilmore Hake
Elizabeth, Colorado - United States

As a young child I would daydream about shapes and color of the landscape as I gazed out the car window on my family excursions. I would imagine living in another time and seeing the land before modern society made its mark. What was it like before houses, highways and farms changed it? I still see quick fleeting images as I think back on my impressions. Now, late in my life, I get my chance to solidify these impressions through my art.

Most of my work is abstract and strongly influenced by the land around me. Color, light, line, form, and shadow are always running through my head. It is amazing to think that the material in my head can combine with the materials of Earth to create a visual communication with my fellow Man. It is this pursuit of the need to create and express myself that keeps me making Art.

I have been working on a series that is influenced by rocks. It has moved from the entire rock form to the patterns and veins that run through them. Rocks like all of nature, are an endless resource for inspiration. If you really look at the individual rock, you can see a delicate pattern in these solid, heavy earthy objects. My rocks come from my soul and those fleeting memories of childhood impressions.

The painting process is important to me so I become very involved with the materials. I have been using charcoal and a variety of types of paints to develop a strong sense of drawing as well as the textures and transparencies of the paint. Color, line and brush strokes are equally important to me. They are a part of a visual language that I am able to use to communicate in a more sensitive manner.

Pamela Gilmore Hake is a dedicated painter and has been since childhood. Sometimes life got in the way of full time art, but it has always been there itching to come out. After raising her children, teaching, working with 4-H and caring for parents, and other family members Pamela rekindled her love affair with painting and teaching art to others. Then, after the death of her husband of 39 years, she found that she had to find out "who she was by herself". Her art is helping her find that "self".

Pamela received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado. She has taught in a variety of venues from Arapahoe Community College to an enrichment school for home-schooled students. She is now working in her studio in her rural home.

Pamela's latest works are abstracts, showing her love for the land, textures and the colors of the southwestern United States. She has always felt at peace with the land and in awe of its magnitude. Rocks have become the content of choice. She strives to bring the spirituality of the land into her abstract interpretations.

She has shown her works in many international, national and local juried exhibitions. She has won numerous awards for her work. Her work is in private collections in both the United States and the United Kingdom. She is a Signature Member of Colorado Watercolor Society, Western Colorado Watercolor Society and Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. Her work can be seen at Sync Gallery and Artwork Network in Denver Colorado.
