This series of richly textured expressionist aspen tree paintings originated during my one month residency award from the prestigious Brush Creek Foundation For The Arts in Saratoga, WY. The ranch sits at the base of the Medicine Bow National Forest between the Sierra Madre and Snowy Mountain ranges just outside the town of Saratoga. I arrived October 1st to the splendor of glorious gold /red hues in all directions. My drive from Denver through Medicine Bow was stunning and my painting studio on the 15,000 acre ranch was a dream.

Aspen tree symbolism includes determination and overcoming fears and doubts. The intense process for how I create these paintings involves a great deal of trust. First I paint layer upon layer to build up the textures. Once the texture is built and completely dry I apply old master glazing techniques to the painting. To do this I have to paint over all the preexisting work. Using cheesecloth I then lift off areas of paint and then rework the entire canvas.

Exhibited in a solo exhibit titled "Dream Currency" at the Artwork Network Gallery, September - October 2013.
