While walking the twisty maze of alleyways in the two-thousand year old Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, I came across this graffiti mural by local artist Ramon Puig. Very colorful and fluid, and a stark contrast to the centuries old buildings it covered, still pockmarked by a civil war eighty years in the past.

Then I saw her: this young woman wearing a colorful Muslim head scarf, doing her afternoon shopping. At first view, it may appear like she doesn't belong, but I like how the little splashes of color on her scarf and robe help her to nearly disappear into the mural behind her. All of these visual and cultural contradictions blend together to tell the complicated story of this neighborhood and country as it enters yet another century.
